Firstly, thank you to Toda Racing, Spoon, Mugen, J's Racing, FEEL's and Endless for their support on this build. 11 months from start to finish!
So why keep it NA? Why ITBS? I'm old (school). All motor power may produce lower hp figures but the way they drive I find more rewarding and has longevity. Throttle response is almost instant.
Each time you attack a lap your mistakes are highlighted, you don't have 500hp to squirt down the straights to make up for your mistakes in the complex bits of a track. I believe this can give you a longer learning curve and more appreciation for minor adjustments to the setup of a car..
Gan San told me via a translator in 2008: "With the R35 GT-R you buy the car, go to your favourite circuit and do 20 laps. You will set the fastest time you ever will with the R35 within those 20 laps. With the NSX-R the learning process takes years. Always seeking that perfect lap, this is what makes the NSX-R so special.."
Who am I to argue with him? Some of the fastest FF Hondas around Tsukuba are NA and within a few seconds of cars with double the power. Lightweight platforms with emphasis on braking, geometry and driver feedback over heavier platforms with little thought on these areas of the cars performance. When you have 550-600hp you can make up for those slower corner entry speeds and lack of throttle response.
Case in point:
Garage Works EG6 - 58.138 around Tsukuba with a similar engine setup to what I have planned. Of course I still have full interior and sunroof!
Building an all motor Toda engine isn't cheap if you think of the hp gained. Not when a (ebay) turbo build is cheap as chips. Costs did spiral a bit towards the end, especially with trying to get it finished for Mimms Honda Day on 11th July. Would i do it differently the 2nd time around? Yes, I'd probably go for the full engine build from the start.
This started out as a UK EG5 Civic with a genuine 31k miles on the odometer. The shell was in really good shape with some crusty rust under the bonnet that needed attention.
I'd say this is now 85% complete. It is being mapped next Monday with standard rods and pistons still in place. We do plan to swap these out for high compression Toda pistons and Toda lightweight rods over the winter. Also plan to fit a Mugen Baffled Sump, OS Giken LSD, swap out the Whiteline Rear Anti Roll Bar for a Cusco DC2 one, replace the Bride seats with KSP Carbon Kevlar NSX seats and fit a Cusco Oil Catch Can..
